Den klassiska långbyxan har i mångt och mycket varit oförändrad till snittet i över 150 år, och modellen som visas här kan sägas vara föregångaren till dagens kostymbyxor. Mönstret till byxorna kommer från 1890-talets Östersund och säljs via Jamtli, men modellen har egentligen ingen direkt lokal särprägel utan skulle kunna ha burits av en stadsbo såväl som en bonde från 1860-talet och framåt.

Jag ville ha en lite varmare vinterbyxa, så materialet är en medeltjock gråmelerad yllekypert som ger ett lite mer rustikt intryck. Till fickpåsar och foder har jag använt en kadettrandig bomullssatin och byxorna är delvis handsydda med vaxad lintråd 35/2, delvis maskinsydda med bomullstråd. Gylfen och midjelinningen knäpps med fyra plastknappar, medan hängslena hålls uppe med sex tennknappar. Slejfen baktill är fodrad med svart siden och har försetts med ett metallspänne från ett gammalt par jeans.

English: Late 19th century style trousers

The classic cut of trousers have remained very similar for more than 150 years, and the ones shown here could be said to represent the forerunner of today’s suit trousers. The pattern is based upon a pair of 1890s trousers from the Swedish town of Östersund, but the style does not reflect a particular local fashion and might have been worn by a townsman or farmer alike from the 1860s onwards.

I wanted a pair of warm trousers for winter used, so I went for a medium-weight woolen twill in a dark grey shade which conveys a slightly more rustic feel. The lining and pocket bags are cut from a striped cotton sateen and the trousers are partially sewn by hand using a waxed linen thread (35/2) and partially machine-sewn with a cotton thread. The fly is closed with four plastic buttons whereas the suspenders are attached with six pewter buttons. The strap at the back is lined with black silk and has a metal buckle attached to it, taken fronm an old discarded pair of jeans.

While others are pre-occupied with holiday preparations I have been busy finishing my latest custom order, a cotehardie made of a nice, light brown worsted wool. The cotehardie is completely handswen as usual and because of the thin and highly frayable fabric I went all in using run-and-fell-seams. In the end I ended up with no less than 70 buttons and button-holes, making it a new personal record which beats last year’s cotehardie with five buttons. Button-mania!

How to make buttons and buttonholes

Now, as a receiver of the award I’m obliged to tell you five things that I love about historical costuming, which shouldn’t be too difficult at all considering my zest for the craft. First of all, historical clothing regardless of age makes it possible to connect with past generations at quite an intimate level, as clothes could be regarded as one’s closest possessions. As a student as well as teacher of history I appreciate the fact that clothes and fashion reveal so much about the time and society in which they were created.

Historical clothing is the cornerstone of all reenactment and living history and it is simply impossible to pursue those activities without dressing the part. By all means this is not in any way a sacrifice since period fashion tends to look better than most of the mass-produced and ill-fitting apparel being sold today, not to mention that they will last longer.

A properly reconstructed historical garb will not only allow you to dress and look like your forebears, but also feel what they felt including everything from smooth linen to coarse itchy wool.

This is of course lead us in to the materials being used, which almost without exception consist of natural materials like linen, wool, leather, silk, and so on. There simply is a sense of genuineness associated with Nature’s own fibers and I love working with them.

Speaking of working I’ve also always been fond of sewing by hand, a relaxing activity that often works like a kind of meditation. When sewing stitch after stitch by hand, time itself often seems to slow down and dissolve. It is also a satisfying thought knowing that you are passing on handicraft skills that are sometimes millennia old, making you a preserver and transmitter of tradition.

Then I am supposed to give the award to three other historical costuming-bloggers, which I am happy to do. There are undoubtedly a plethora of skilled ”colleagues” of mine out there who are at least as passionate about historical clothing, but the following bloggers have still not received the award as far as I know:

Kurage: Fellow Albrechtian Anders is a bloke skilled in many crafts, not least when it comes to costuming and documenting it. His 18^th century stuff is equally as impeccable and inspiring as his 14^th century work.

Mat, sömnad och tusen andra saker or ”Food, sewing, and a thousand other things” is a Swedish-language blog run by a friend of mine particularly hooked on the 18^th and early 19^th centuries. Although her historical garb is excellent one should also not fail to notice her period cooking adventures!

Frejs knivmakeri och annat konsthantverk: Although mainly dedicated to knifemaking and other ”hard” crafts, Frej has also proved to be a skilled tailor. I especially appreciate his fearless approach in trying on less common and less known garments such as the iron age trousers from Dätgen or tricolored cotehardie. This guy sure know how to dig out exciting stuff from the hidden depths of the period wardrobe!

Mitt senaste beställningsarbete är en senromersk tunika av den typ som ingick i legionärernas vestis militaris eller fältkläder under perioden ca 200-500. Tunikan är av naturvit kypertvävt ylle och försedd med röda ylleapplikationer, så kallade clavi. Denna typ av plagg brukar ibland kallas ”koptisk tunika” då flera bevarade tunikor från senantiken har påträffats i Egypten, och dessa har i regel vävts i ett stycke med clavi integrerade i varpen. Under antiken omtalades plagget dock som tunica manicata (eller chiton cheiridotos på grekiska), dvs långärmad tunika och lär ha kommit till under påverkan av germanskt dräktskick – innan 200-talet bar legionärerna i regel kortärmade eller ärmlösa tunikor. Vanligtvis bars den över en undertunika eller skjorta i linne, linea eller kamision.

Tunikan är av en mycket enkel och rymlig modell och är i praktiken ett stort kors som vikts av på mitten och sytts samman längst sidorna med täta efterstygn av vaxad blekt lintråd 60/2. En slits har lämnats som halsöppning. Kroppen är mycket vid medan ärmarna är lätt avsmalnande, och på det stora hela är det ett överraskande bekvämt plagg som jag kan tänka mig var ett mycket praktiskt grundplagg för soldater. Tunikans rustika material och förhållandevis enkla clavi antyder att det är ett plagg som kan ha burits av en menig legionär snarare än en officerare, vilka tycks ha föredragit mer utsmyckade plagg.

English: Late Roman tunic

My latest custom work is a late Roman tunic of the same type belonging to the legionaries’ vestis militaris or field garb during the 3^rd to 6^th centuries. The tunic is made of a natural off-white woolen twill and fitted with decorative red woolen strips, so called clavi. Sometimes this kind of garment is referred to as ”Coptic tunic” due to the fact that several preserved examples from late antiquity have been found in Egypt; those garments were normally woven in one piece on a wide loom with the clavi being integrated into the warp and/or emboroidered. During antiquity however such a garment would have been known as a tunica manicata or chiton cheiridotos, i.e. ”long-sleeved tunic”, and it is thought to have entered roman military and civilian fashion due to Germanic influence – before the 3^rd century the legionaries uasually wore short-sleeved or sleeveless tunics. Generally the tunica was worn on top of a linen under-tunic or shirt known as linea or kamision.

The tunic is cut in a very simple and voluminous fashion and virtually consists of a large cross of cloth folded over and sewn together at the sides with back-stitches using a bleached, waxed linen thread 60/2. The neck opening consists of a simple hemmed slit. The otherwise loose tunic has fairly tight, tapering sleeves, and altogether it is a surprisingly comfortable garment that I can very well image to have accomodated the legionaries’ need for a practical foundation garment. The plain material and rather modest appearance of the clavi suggests a tunic that might have been worn by a legionary of the rank and file rather than an officer, as they seem to have preferred showing off with more elaborately decorated garments.

Eftersom jag tidigare sålt mitt första panzar från förra årets säsong var jag i behov av ett nytt inför Battle of Wisby i år. Detta är mitt tredje panzar efter att strax innan sytt ett på beställning, ett plagg som tog lite drygt en veckas intensivt quiltande och sömnande att färdigställa. Som källor utgick jag främst från den engelska riddaren Robert Shurlands (d. 1328) gravhäll, som visar dennes väpnare iförd ett panzar, samt skotska 1200-1300-talsgravhällar från Hebriderna. Panzaret består av fyra lager linnekanvas och mellan två till tre lager gråvadd för möbeltapetsering. De respektiva delarna quiltades först för att senare sys ihop med kaststygn, ärmen gjordes tvådelad och böjd för att underlätta rörligheten. All sömnad och quiltning är utförd med kraftig vaxad lintråd 20/3. Quiltningen är gjord med förstygn, ca 1-2 stygn / cm och med 3 cm mellanrum. Plaggets totala vikt ligger på runt 7-8 kg.

 Resultatet blev lite sisådär, plagget dämpar helt klart slag på ett tillfredsställande sätt men är i gengäld ganska otympligt och passformen lämnar mycket att önska. Det bör påpekas att regelbunden användning gör vadderade plagg av den här typen mjukare och bekvämare, men ett lättare panzar/vapentröja och brynja över skulle med all sannolikhet ändå ge ett bättre och smidigare skydd till det ringa priset av ett par kilos extra vikt.

English: Gambeson or Panzar – third attempt
Since I sold my first panzar from last year’s reenactment season I was in dire need of a new one to wear at the great reenactment of the battle of Wisby this year. This is my third panzar (having made a custom one just shortly before), a garment that took about a week of intense sewing and quilting to finish. The knee-length panzar is primarely based on the effigy of sir Robert Shurland (1328), which shows his squire dressed in a gambeson or aketon, as well as 13-14th century Scottish effegies from the Hebrides. My new panzar consists of four layers of linen canvas and two to three layers of cotton padding used for upholstery. As with my first attempt, the different panels were first quilted and then joined using whip-stitches; the sleeves are made in two pieses making it pre-bent for ease of movement. For the sewing and quilting I used a heavy waxed linen thread 20/3. The quilting was made using stab-stiches, about 1-2 stitches /cm and 3 cm between the seams.  The total weight of the garment is about 7-8 kg or 15-17 lbs.

The result could be describes as so-so, the garment certainly cushions blows very well but in return it is somewhat cumbersome and the fit could have been better. It should be noted though that regular use makes padded garments such as this softer and more comfortable to wear, but still I’m sure that a lighter gambeson and a mail shirt worn on top of that would offer a better and more flexible protection at the negligible cost of a few kilos extra weight.

Efter att ha gjort klart skidans träkärna var det dags att förstärka den med ett lager limmat linne. Detta verkar ha varit praxis i medeltida skidor, men glöms ofta bort av samtida tillverkare av svärdsskidor. Fördelen med detta inre lager är att skidan håller ihop även om den skulle knäckas, vilket lätt kan hända om man skulle ramla på den i stridstumultet eller får en smäll på skidan från något otäckt stålvapen modell större. Traditionellt användes hudlim, jag använde dock vanligt trälim med gott resultat.

Innan det blev dags för att klä skidan i skinn såg jag till att limma på två upphöjningar nära mynningen i form av läderremmar. Detta för att den framtida upphängningen ska sitta stabilare. Det yttersta lagret består av vegetabilgarvat och millimetertunt kalvskinn, som syddes på med vaxad lintråd (20/3) i vått tillstånd och sedan färgades med svartbrun oljebaserad läderfärg från Fiebing. Det våta lädret krymper alltefter som det torkar och sitter sedan smäcktajt kring kärnan utan att något lim behöver användas.

Sedan var det svärdsbältets tur. Jag valde en medeltida ”standarupphägning” med laskade remmar av den typ som av allt att döma var vanlig för enhandssvärd under perioden ca 1100-1350. En utförlig beskrivning om hur man gör en sådan finns här. Till sist vaxades både skidan och bältet med upphettat bivax för att göra dem mer tåliga och vattenavisande. En enkel mässingsölja nitades fast och svärdsupphängningen blev färdig att användas lagom inför det stora återuppspelandet av slaget vid Visby ringmur 1361.
Att tillverka en svärdsskida med tillhörande upphängning är ett intressant och omväxlande hantverk eftersom man får tillfälle att arbeta både med trä, textil, läder och metall. Inför nästa skida kommer jag förmodligen göra den något tunnare, använda ett smidigare skinn till bältet samt fodra skidan invändigt med ylle eller dyl. material i syfte att förhindra glapp – i Visby märkte jag snart att svärdet gärna ville glida ur skidan. En skida bör också förses med  en doppsko i metall, eftersom udden längst ut kommer att ustättas för slitage förr eller senare.

English: wooden scabbard part II

Previously I have described how I shaped a wooden scabbard for my one handed sword,  here is the rest of the story.

After finishing the wooden core I had it reinforced with a layer of glued linen. This seems to have been common practise during the Middle Ages, although it is often forgotten by contemporary scabbard-makers. The advantage of a linen reinforcement is that the wooden core will keep together even if it should break, which might happen if you’re unlucky to fall on your scabbard in the fray of battle or if it should receive a heavy blow from a mean steel weapon. Historically, hide glue would have been used although I made fine with a common not-that-period wooden glue.
Before covering the scabbard in leather I glued on a pair of risers consisting of leather cords near the scabbard mouth. These are meant to help keeping the thongs of the sword belt in place. The final layer consists of vegetable tanned calsfskin, millimeter thin and sewn on while damp using waxed linen thread (20/3) and dyed with blackish-brown oil dye from Fiebing. The moist leather will shrink as it dries and in the end it will squeese tight around the core without the need for glue.

Then it was time to make the sword belt. I went for a common medieval ”standard suspension” involving lacing the belt in place as seen on one-handed swords throughout the period ca 1100-1350. A detailed instruction of how to do this can be found here. Finally I treated the scabbard and sword belt with heated bees wax making them more resilient and water-resistant. A brass buckle was attached and the scabbard was ready for action just in time for the long-awaited reenactment of the Battle of Visby 1361.

Constructing a wooden sword scabbard with attached sword belt makes an interesting and varied project as it allows you to work with both wood, textile, leather and metal as well. Next time I will probably be aiming for a thinner scabbard, using an internal liner of woolen fabric or similar material in order to prevent a loose fit – In Visby my sword had a tendency to slide out of the unlined scabbard. The sword belt would probably benefit from being made with a more flexible leather, and any scabbard should be fitted with a metal chape as the tip will suffer from wear and tear sooner ot later.

Härlägret vid Östergravar under Battle of Wisby

Det finns olika metoder att tillverka svärdsskidor, men jag valde att utgå från metod 1 och 3 som beskriv här. De två träpanelerna gröptes lätt ut till ett djup av ca 1 mm längst med svärdets konturer, och däremellan lades ett mellanlägg av tunn björkplywood som hyvlades ner till strax över 2 mm tjocklek. Efter att jag tejpat ihop delarna och noga kontrollerat så att svärdsklingan passade som handen i handsken limmades allt ihop med vanligt trälim (fisklim eller hudlim användes på medeltiden). När limmet torkat sågades skidan till så att den blev 1 cm bredare än klingan runtom. Kanterna hyvlades sedan så att de blev spikraka och till sist hyvlades hörnen av så att skidan blev rundad och slät. Eftersom svärdets parerstång böjer sig framåt blev även mynningen lätt rundad. Någon ytterligare behandling av ytan är inte nödvändig då svärdet ska kläs med linne och läder, vilket blir nästa steg i tillverkningsprocessen.

English: Wooden Scabbard Part 1

Recently I got myself a new sword, a nifty one-hander made by Czech swordsmith Pavel Moc known as the ”Tower” (probably dubbed so after the so called Tower Manuscript or I:33, commonly dated to ca 1290-1300). Since the practise of wearing your exposed blunt sword tucked in the belt is to be considered a mortal sin among reenactors I was keen to have a scabbard made for the swoord as soon as possible. Usually medieval scabbards seems to have been made around a wooden core, although finds from Åbo (Turku) in Finland suggests that some were made with an untanned leather core. I have wanted to try making a wooden scabbard for some time so in the end I went for a wooden one. There are a number of types of wood that can be used for a scabbard but hardwood is considered to be the best choice, with the exception of oak which is said to stain the blade. I picked birch for my scabbard, a wood native to Sweden and a readily available material to any scabbard maker in the past as well as the present. It is also lighter than e.g. ash. If you don’t have access to a workshop or any other facilities suitable for woodworking you can do as I did and have the wood fixed at the local carpenter. The two 7 mm thick wooden slats were made 1 cm wider than the finished scabbard and 10 cm longer.

There are various methods when it comes to scabbard-making, but I chose to try on method 1 and 3 as described here. First I scooped the wooden slats along the outline of the sword blade to a slight depth of 1 mm, then added a thin insertion of birch plywood that was planed down to a thickness of slightly above 2 mm. After the three layers were taped together and the fit of the blade was carefully checked, the whole thing was glued together using common wood glue (go with fish glue or hide glue if you wish to use the period stuff). After the glue had dried the shape of the scabbard was sawed, leaving a 1 cm wood around the blade. The edges were then made trimmed and made dead straight using a plane, and finally the sharp corners were shaved off rendering a smooth, oval-shaped scabbard. The mouth of the scabbard was also made rounded to accomodate the slightly curved cross-guard. There is no need for any further treatment of the wood surface as the scabbard is meant to be dressed in leather, which will be the next step in the scabbard making-process.

Som jag antydde i mitt förra inlägg har jag alltså varit fullt upptagen den senaste månaden med ett beställningsuppdrag som inkluderar en kjortel i tunt olivgrönt ylle efter Bockstensfyndet, ett par gröna långa hosor i yllekypert, en linnefodrad bockstenshätta av brun rysk vadmal samt två skjortor och ett par brokor av handvävt linnetyg. I sin helhet utgör dessa plagg en grunduppsättning av enkla manskläder från 1300-talets mitt, och samtliga plagg är helt handsydda med vaxad lintråd 35/2 eller 60/2.

English: As hinted in my previous post I’ve been busy this last month or so with a custom project including a cote or kyrtle after the Bocksten bog find, a pair of green woolen twill hosen, a Bocksten-style hood made from a heavy Russian wool lined with linen for comfort, and two shirts as well as a pair of braies made from a home-spun and hand-woven tabby linen fabric. As a whole these garments represent a basic set of men’s clothes from the mid 14th century, and they are all sewn by hand using waxed linen thread 35/2 or 60/2.
